Nigerian authorities have released 29 children who were detained for over two months and faced the death penalty for their alleged involvement in protests against the country's severe cost-of-living crisis. The children were initially charged with property destruction, mutiny, and treason, alongside more than 70 others, during the August protests. These charges could have resulted in the death penalty. The release follows growing public pressure and a direct order from President Bola Tinubu, who intervened to secure their freedom.
The government should have dealt with the protesters more harshly from the start to maintain order and avoid this kind of chaos.

It's insane that these kids were facing the death penalty just for protesting an economic crisis their government helped create. This is exactly why centralized power is so dangerous – it's always regular people, and even children, who end up paying the price. It shouldn’t take a president's intervention to stop such an injustice; people should have the freedom to speak out without fear of death. If governments were smaller and less intrusive, we wouldn’t see these kinds of abuses.
